The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has commended Senator Osita Ngwu of Enugu West for awarding 250 million naira in scholarships and bursaries to students from Enugu State. The ceremony held in Enugu brought together educational stakeholders, community leaders, parents and beneficiaries to celebrate the gesture aimed at expanding access to higher education for youths across the senatorial district.
Akpabio, who was the special guest of honour at the event, described Ngwu’s scholarship initiative as a bold investment in the future of the region’s youth. He said that providing young people with opportunities to pursue education without the burden of financial constraints is essential for national growth and prosperity. The Senate President noted that Ngwu’s commitment to human capital development reflects a deep sense of responsibility that goes beyond political office.
Senator Ngwu told the gathering that the scholarship programme was created to support academically bright but economically disadvantaged students preparing for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, undergraduate courses and postgraduate studies. He explained that the programme had grown from modest beginnings into a structured initiative designed to identify and assist committed learners with financial need. The senator urged beneficiaries to work diligently, saying the investment in their education was intended to equip them for leadership and service in their communities.
Representatives of the Enugu State government, including the deputy governor, praised the scholarship as a complement to state efforts to strengthen education and called on other leaders with capacity to invest in similar initiatives for youth empowerment. Akpabio also announced a personal contribution of 100 million naira toward the Enugu West Academy, the educational institution through which the scholarships are administered, to support its expansion and deepen its impact.
Parents and student beneficiaries expressed appreciation for the financial support, describing it as life‑changing and a source of renewed hope for academic success. The scholarship awards are expected to cover tuition, allowances and academic materials for students entering universities and other tertiary institutions.
The event underscored growing calls among community leaders for targeted interventions that enhance access to quality education and reduce barriers for talented students from low‑income families. The scholarship programme is likely to influence similar efforts aimed at fostering inclusive education in the state.
