The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has asked the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to apologize over a remark directed at Seun Okinbaloye, describing the statement as one that has no place in public office.
In a statement dated April 5, 2026 and signed by its National President, Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, the union drew attention to the minister’s comment in which he said he would have shot the journalist if it were possible through a television screen. It said the words stand on their own and do not need interpretation.
The NUJ said it waited, giving room for a withdrawal. None came. It said that silence leaves the remark hanging and raises questions that cannot be ignored.
The union said comments of that nature put journalists on edge and send the wrong message about how public officials respond to scrutiny. It added that the work of the press should not attract threats, whether said in passing or meant as a joke.
It called on the Federal Government to take a position and make it clear that such remarks are not acceptable, noting that journalists must be able to ask questions without fear. The union also urged media organisations and civil society groups to stand firm and speak with one voice on the issue.
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) is the umbrella body for practicing journalists in the country and has, over the years, remained involved in matters affecting press freedom and professional conduct.
