President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, has congratulated Nigerian workers on the occasion of the 2026 International Labour Day, commending their resilience, hard work and patriotism despite the challenges they face in the course of their duties.
This was contained in a May Day congratulatory message personally signed by him.
In the message, Akpabio said he joined millions of Nigerians at home and in the diaspora in celebrating workers whose efforts continue to sustain the nation’s economy and democratic structure.
He praised workers across various sectors including education, agriculture, healthcare, security, civil service and the private sector, describing them as the backbone of national development and the true heroes of democracy.
He said the 10th National Assembly is aware of the challenges facing workers, including rising cost of living and workplace demands, and assured that the Senate remains committed to legislating for improved welfare, fair wages, safer working conditions, pension reforms and job creation.
Akpabio further stated that the passage of the National Minimum Wage Act and ongoing implementation of workers’ welfare packages reflect the legislature’s commitment to protecting labour interests.
He urged employers in both public and private sectors to prioritize workers’ welfare, stressing that a motivated workforce is essential for national productivity and economic stability.
The Senate President also commended organised labour for its engagement and patriotism, assuring continued collaboration with the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress in advancing workers’ interests within policy and legislative frameworks.
He further reassured that the National Assembly will continue to support and advance policies targeted at improving the welfare, working conditions and overall dignity of Nigerian workers across all sectors.
