The frontline All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate for Orumba North and South Federal Constituency, Dr Odiraa Nwankwor, has been honoured with the Award for Global Healthcare Excellence and Humanitarian Leadership by the Department of Accountancy, Faculty of Management Sciences, Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to healthcare innovation, medical education, humanitarian service and global leadership in pediatric critical care.
The award was presented on Wednesday during a ceremony organized by the department under the leadership of its Head, Prof. Onyinye Eneh, who described the recognition as a celebration of a career distinguished by service, innovation and transformative impact in healthcare delivery.
In a citation presented at the event, the department highlighted Nwankwor’s pioneering role in establishing Nigeria’s first organized Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), a landmark achievement widely regarded as a significant contribution to the advancement of specialized healthcare services in the country. It also acknowledged his efforts in strengthening healthcare delivery in resource-limited environments, mentoring future healthcare professionals and supporting community development initiatives.
According to the department, Nwankwor’s accomplishments embody the values of excellence, innovation, service and sustainable development. It noted that his contributions continue to inspire healthcare practitioners, students, academics and professionals across various sectors.
The citation further stated that his life and career reflect the transformative power of knowledge, dedication and selfless service. It added that his achievements demonstrate how professional excellence can be effectively combined with humanitarian commitment to address pressing societal challenges and improve lives.
Nwankwor, an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Sidney Kimmel Medical College in the United States, was also commended for his global leadership in pediatric critical care and for advancing medical education through mentorship, research and professional development. The department stressed that his work has impacted lives both within Nigeria and internationally, earning him recognition among distinguished healthcare professionals of Nigerian origin.
It further stated that his remarkable record of service would continue to motivate young people, scholars and professionals to pursue innovative and practical solutions to Africa’s developmental and healthcare challenges.
Although he was unavoidably absent from the ceremony, the award was received on his behalf by the immediate past Chief Medical Director of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Amaku, Awka, and former Commissioner for Health in Anambra State, Dr. Joe Akabuike.
The event attracted several distinguished personalities from academia, government and public service. Among those in attendance were the Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie; former Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and former Minister of Aviation, Chief Osita Chidoka; former Director-General of the Armed Forces Research and Development Bureau, Major General Charles Ofoche (Rtd); as well as other notable dignitaries from different sectors.
Speakers at the event described the honour as a fitting recognition of a distinguished son of Orumba whose contributions to medicine, education, humanitarian service and community development have continued to earn national and international acclaim. They noted that his accomplishments have not only elevated the profile of his community but have also demonstrated the capacity of Nigerians to make meaningful contributions to global healthcare advancement.
Dr. Nwankwor is an internationally respected pediatric critical care specialist, educator and researcher. Beyond his medical career, he has remained actively involved in humanitarian and community development initiatives, particularly in Anambra State. His growing profile in public service and grassroots engagement has also placed him among the prominent political figures seeking to represent Orumba North and South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives unopposed under the platform of APGA.
