President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Tuesday charged senators to recommit themselves to the task of nation building as the Senate resumed plenary after its legislative recess.
Delivering his welcome address at the commencement of proceedings, Akpabio said the resumption marked the beginning of another phase in the work of the Tenth Senate, urging lawmakers to remain focused on the mandate given to them by Nigerians.
He welcomed members back from the recess and observed that although the Senate had adjourned, lawmakers remained actively engaged with developments across the country and in their respective constituencies.
The Senate President expressed sadness over the death of former Senator Godiya Akwashiki, describing him as a committed public servant whose contributions to the legislature and national development would be remembered. He extended condolences to the deceased’s family, the people of Nasarawa North Senatorial District and members of the National Assembly.
Turning to national issues, Akpabio said the country continued to face security, economic and social challenges that require sustained legislative attention. He noted that many Nigerians were looking to government for practical solutions capable of improving their daily lives.
According to him, the responsibility of the Senate goes beyond making laws, stressing that effective oversight, constructive engagement with the Executive and prompt consideration of matters affecting the welfare of citizens remain central to the work of the National Assembly.
He urged senators to give priority to bills and motions that would strengthen the economy, improve national security, expand opportunities for young people, support education and healthcare, and promote good governance.
Akpabio also expressed concern over reports indicating that millions of Nigerians could face food insecurity this year, calling for greater legislative support for policies aimed at increasing agricultural production and protecting vulnerable households.
On security, the Senate President sympathised with families affected by attacks in different parts of the country and called for continued support for the nation’s security agencies. He appealed for prayers for victims of kidnapping and others still in captivity, expressing hope that they would regain their freedom.
As political activities begin to gather momentum ahead of future elections, Akpabio urged political leaders and stakeholders to conduct themselves responsibly and avoid actions capable of heightening tension in the country.
He stressed that national interest should remain above political differences, adding that Nigerians expect their elected representatives to work together in addressing the country’s pressing challenges.
The Senate President also called on lawmakers to sustain the cordial working relationship between the Legislature and the Executive while maintaining the independence of the National Assembly in carrying out its constitutional responsibilities.
He reminded senators that the remaining period of the Tenth Senate provides an opportunity to conclude important legislative assignments and deliver reforms that would have a positive impact on the lives of Nigerians.
Akpabio urged members to approach the new legislative session with dedication, patriotism and a renewed commitment to the confidence reposed in them by the electorate.
