The Nigerian Senate has passed and concurred to the bill establishing the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Ikwuano, bringing to a successful conclusion the legislative process for the creation of the new federal health institution in Abia State.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Media Team of the Rt. Hon. Obi Aguocha Liaison Office, Umuahia, the Senate’s approval of the bill marks a historic milestone for the people of Ikwuano, Umuahia North and Umuahia South Federal Constituency, as both chambers of the National Assembly have now given their backing to the proposed Federal Medical Centre.
The statement explained that the bill, HB 1605, was sponsored by the Member representing Ikwuano, Umuahia North and Umuahia South Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Obi Aguocha, and had earlier scaled all legislative stages in the House of Representatives before receiving the concurrence of the Senate.
It noted that with the Senate’s approval, the National Assembly has now spoken with one voice in support of the establishment of the Federal Medical Centre in Ikwuano, describing the development as a landmark legislative achievement and another major institutional project attracted to the federal constituency.
The Media Team further stated that the proposed medical centre represents a strategic investment that will strengthen access to quality healthcare, create employment opportunities, support medical education and research, and contribute significantly to the socio-economic development of the area.
According to the statement, the establishment of the Federal Medical Centre goes beyond the creation of another healthcare facility, stressing that it reflects a deliberate effort to build enduring public institutions that will continue to serve the people for generations.
The statement maintained that the latest legislative success underscores Rt. Hon. Aguocha’s commitment to delivering people-oriented representation through concrete achievements rather than political rhetoric.
It quoted the lawmaker as saying that, “effective representation is measured not merely by empty political rhetorics that constitutes nuisance and distractions, but by tangible legislative accomplishments that directly improve the lives of the people and long-term growth and development of our Federal Constituency.”
The statement observed that the successful passage of the bill adds to the growing list of legislative interventions championed by the federal lawmaker, describing the establishment of the Federal Medical Centre as one of the most significant institutional dividends attracted to the constituency.
While expressing appreciation to the leadership and members of both the Senate and the House of Representatives for their support throughout the legislative process, the Office of Rt. Hon. Obi Aguocha said it is optimistic that the bill will now receive Presidential Assent, paving the way for the formal establishment of the Federal Medical Centre, Ikwuano.
The Office expressed confidence that once assented to by the President, the new Federal Medical Centre will enhance healthcare delivery not only for residents of Ikwuano, Umuahia North and Umuahia South Federal Constituency but also for neighbouring communities across Abia State and the South-East region.
