The Anambra South Senatorial District candidate of the National Democratic Coalition (NDC), Chief Ebuka Onunkwo, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic collapse of a private hostel in Amaokpala, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, describing the incident as a heartbreaking tragedy that has thrown families and communities into mourning.
The building, located near the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, reportedly collapsed, claiming lives, leaving several persons injured and causing widespread grief among residents of the area.
In a statement, Onunkwo extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones and prayed for the speedy recovery of victims currently receiving medical treatment.
He also expressed hope that ongoing rescue operations would account for every person affected by the disaster.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and everyone affected by this heartbreaking incident. I also pray for the speedy recovery of those receiving medical treatment and remain hopeful that those still unaccounted for, if any, will be reached safely by the ongoing rescue efforts,” he stated.
The NDC senatorial flagbearer commended emergency responders, security agencies, medical personnel, volunteers and members of the host community for their prompt response and commitment in rescuing victims and providing support in the aftermath of the collapse.
According to him, their courage, dedication and selfless service reflected the resilience and compassion for which the people of Anambra are known.
Onunkwo said the unfortunate incident underscores the urgent need for strict compliance with building regulations, regular structural integrity assessments and stronger regulatory oversight, particularly for facilities used by students and other residents.
He called on the relevant authorities to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the collapse, insisting that the outcome should be made public and that anyone found culpable through negligence should face the full weight of the law.
“This tragedy is a painful reminder of the importance of strict adherence to building standards, effective regulatory oversight, and regular structural inspections, particularly for facilities accommodating students and other residents,” he said.
He further urged the Anambra State Government, emergency management agencies, humanitarian organisations and public-spirited individuals to sustain rescue efforts and provide medical, humanitarian and psychological support to victims and bereaved families.
Onunkwo reaffirmed his solidarity with the people of Amaokpala, Oko and the entire Orumba North community, assuring them that they were not alone in their moment of grief.
“As a son of Anambra South and one who is deeply committed to the welfare and safety of our people, I stand in solidarity with the people of Amaokpala, Oko, and the entire Orumba North community during this difficult time,” he said.
He prayed for God’s comfort upon the bereaved families, healing for the injured, protection for those participating in the rescue operations and strength for the affected communities to overcome the devastating loss.
