Afreximbank Secures $1.5bn Eurobond In Record Issuance

By George Ozalla

The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has successfully raised US$1.5 billion through a dual-tranche senior unsecured benchmark Eurobond, marking the largest bond issuance in the history of the pan-African financial institution.
The landmark transaction also represents Afreximbank’s first public US dollar bond issuance since July 2021, underscoring the bank’s return to the international capital market with strong investor appetite.
The bond was issued in two equal tranches of US$750 million each. The first tranche carries a five-and-a-half-year maturity period and is scheduled to mature in January 2032, while the second tranche has a 10-year tenor and will mature in July 2036.
Afreximbank said the successful pricing of the Eurobond reflects continued confidence in the institution’s financial strength, business model and role in supporting Africa’s economic development through trade financing and investment.
The issuance provides the bank with additional resources to expand its support for African economies, particularly in areas such as trade facilitation, industrial development, export financing and private sector growth.
The transaction comes as African countries and businesses continue to seek stronger access to funding sources to support economic expansion, infrastructure development and increased participation in global trade.
Afreximbank, established to promote and finance intra-African and international trade, has remained a key player in providing financial solutions to governments, financial institutions and businesses across the continent.
The bank’s latest bond issuance further strengthens its position in global financial markets and provides additional capacity to deliver on its mandate of accelerating Africa’s trade and investment objectives.
