Nigeria and Sierra Leone have strengthened efforts to expand bilateral trade and investment following the inauguration of the maiden Nigeria Chamber of Commerce Trade Fair in Freetown, a landmark initiative expected to deepen commercial cooperation and create new opportunities for businesses in both countries.
Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Sierra Leone, Ambassador Ayo Luther-Ogbomode, joined senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, investors and business leaders at the opening ceremony held on July 30, 2026. His presence underscored Nigeria’s commitment to advancing economic diplomacy and fostering stronger commercial ties within the West African sub-region.
The trade fair was officially declared open by Sierra Leone’s Minister of Trade and Industry, Alpha Ibrahim Sesay, who described enhanced trade and investment between the two countries as essential to accelerating private sector growth, promoting industrial development and advancing regional economic integration. He stressed the need for stronger collaboration between businesses in Nigeria and Sierra Leone to unlock the enormous economic potential that exists across various sectors.
The exhibition brings together manufacturers, exporters, service providers and investors, providing a platform for participants to showcase their products and services, explore investment prospects, exchange business ideas and establish strategic partnerships capable of driving economic growth and expanding cross-border commerce.
Organisers of the event said the trade fair is designed to encourage greater interaction between the private sectors of both countries while creating new avenues for investment, technology exchange and market access. They expressed confidence that the initiative would contribute to increased trade volumes and strengthen existing economic relations between Nigeria and Sierra Leone.
Ambassador Luther-Ogbomode reaffirmed Nigeria’s support for initiatives that encourage business-to-business engagement and regional economic cooperation, noting that stronger commercial partnerships remain vital to achieving sustainable economic development across West Africa.
The maiden Nigeria Chamber of Commerce Trade Fair is expected to serve as a catalyst for increased bilateral trade, attract new investments and reinforce the longstanding diplomatic and economic relationship between Nigeria and Sierra Leone, while opening fresh opportunities for entrepreneurs and investors from both nations.
