The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to stabilising Nigeria’s electricity grid and improving the reliability of power supply across the country, with renewed focus on strengthening the nation’s transmission infrastructure as a critical step towards sustainable power sector reforms.
Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, said the government is prioritising long-term improvements to the national transmission system, stressing that a stable electricity grid is fundamental to achieving meaningful progress across the entire power value chain.
According to the minister, efforts to increase electricity generation and improve distribution will continue to yield limited results if the persistent challenges within the transmission network are not comprehensively addressed.
To drive the initiative, the Ministry of Power has established a Technical Working Committee on Grid Stabilisation to develop practical and sustainable solutions to the challenges affecting the national grid. The committee comprises experts drawn from the engineering, technical and regulatory sectors and is expected to address ageing infrastructure, transmission bottlenecks and the recurring system disturbances that have disrupted electricity supply in different parts of the country.
As part of its mandate, the committee will work closely with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and the Nigerian Independent System Operator to identify critical areas requiring urgent intervention, strengthen grid operations and improve the resilience of the national transmission network.
Government officials said planned investments under the initiative will focus on reinforcing strategic transmission corridors, expanding backup capacity within the network and upgrading monitoring, protection and control systems to reduce system failures, minimise outages and enhance operational efficiency.
The latest move forms part of the Federal Government’s broader strategy to reposition the power sector, improve electricity delivery and restore public confidence after years of unstable power supply, repeated grid disturbances and unfulfilled expectations.
Acknowledging widespread public concerns over previous commitments in the sector, Tegbe said the present administration would rather be assessed by measurable outcomes than by promises, emphasising that Nigerians deserve a more reliable and efficient electricity supply.
The ministry also disclosed that periodic progress reports on the grid stabilisation programme would be made available to the public to promote transparency, accountability and sustained engagement with citizens, investors and other stakeholders in the power sector.
Officials expressed confidence that the programme would provide a solid foundation for a more stable national grid, support increased power generation and distribution, attract greater investment into the electricity sector and advance ongoing reforms aimed at delivering reliable and affordable electricity to homes, businesses and industries across the country.
