The Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Dr Aminu Yusuf, has died at the age of 66.
Yusuf died in Abuja on Friday, August 28, 2026, following a brief illness, according to a statement issued by the Commission and signed by the Director, Public Affairs Department, Mrs Adelayo Serifat Olurode.
Yusuf was sworn in as the eighth substantive Chairman of the NPC by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on December 3, 2025. He was appointed to lead the commission at a time when the agency was working to strengthen its capacity to produce reliable demographic data for national planning and development.
Since assuming office, Yusuf had pursued a Seven Point Agenda designed to reposition the commission and improve its operations.
Born on April 15, 1960, in Wushishi, Niger State, Yusuf had a long record of public service before his appointment to the NPC. He served as Executive Chairman of Wushishi Local Government Area and was also a Member-elect of the Niger State House of Assembly.
He was a Board Member of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and served as Special Adviser on Political Affairs to the Governor of Niger State.
Until his appointment as Chairman of the NPC, Yusuf was the National President of the Niger State College of Education Alumni Association, Minna. He was also Co-Chairman of the Senator Abubakar Sani Bello Skill Acquisition and Development Committee.
The NPC described the late chairman as a dedicated patriot and astute administrator who was committed to national development and the production of credible demographic data.
The Commission expressed condolences to President Tinubu, the Federal Government, the government and people of Niger State, as well as members of the Yusuf family.
The condolences were conveyed on behalf of the Federal Commissioners, the Director-General, management and staff of the NPC.
The Commission prayed that Almighty Allah forgive Yusuf’s shortcomings, grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus and give his family, friends and associates the strength to bear his death.
