Customs CG Receives DECAN Awards for Border Security

By George Ozalla

The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, has received awards from the Defence Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DECAN) in recognition of the Service’s efforts in securing the nation’s borders, facilitating legitimate trade and protecting the national economy.

Adeniyi received the awards on behalf of the Service at DECAN’s 2026 Conference and Awards Ceremony held in Abuja on Monday.

The recognition covered the NCS’s work in border security, trade facilitation, economic protection, intelligence-led enforcement and the use of technology in tackling smuggling and other cross-border crimes.

DECAN commended the Service for its intensified anti-smuggling operations, intelligence gathering and revenue generation efforts, noting their importance in preventing illicit activities across Nigeria’s borders while supporting legitimate commercial transactions.

The association also recognised the contribution of the NCS National Public Relations Officer, Deputy Comptroller Abdullahi Maiwada, to public awareness, transparency and communication on the Service’s operations and modernisation programmes.

The recognition of the public relations function highlighted the need for effective communication between security agencies and the public, particularly in explaining enforcement activities, statutory responsibilities and reforms within the Customs Service.

The conference focused on the theme, “Beyond Kinetic Warfare: Harnessing Technology and Intelligence-Led Operations for Nigeria’s National Security.”

Participants examined the growing role of technology, intelligence sharing and cooperation among security agencies in addressing threats to Nigeria’s security. Discussions also considered how improved coordination and timely information could strengthen responses to smuggling, trafficking and other transnational crimes.

The NCS plays a central role in protecting Nigeria’s borders, enforcing customs laws, collecting government revenue and facilitating international trade. Its operations also support efforts to prevent the entry and movement of prohibited goods while ensuring that legitimate imports and exports comply with applicable regulations.

The awards come as the Service pursues improvements in customs administration through technology, intelligence-driven enforcement and cooperation with other security and regulatory agencies.

DECAN is a professional association of journalists covering defence, military and security affairs in Nigeria. Its activities include promoting responsible reporting and engagement between the media and institutions responsible for national security.
