Customs Seizes Cannabis Worth ₦2.26bn at Lekki Port

By George Ozalla

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Lekki Free Trade Zone Command, has intercepted 400 kilogrammes of suspected cannabis valued at ₦2.26 billion concealed in a container of printing paper at Lekki Deep Sea Port, Lagos.

The Acting Customs Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller Olufemi Kukoyi, disclosed this on Thursday, October 15, 2026, during the handover of the seized substance to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Kukoyi said the container, with registration number PRSU1562064, was intercepted on August 19, 2026, after it was flagged for examination. It was reportedly scheduled for movement by barge to a bonded terminal outside the Command’s jurisdiction.

He said a joint examination by enforcement officers uncovered 400 packages of cannabis weighing 400 kilogrammes, concealed among 798 reams of A4 printing paper.

The consignment has a duty-paid value of ₦2,262,960,000.

Kukoyi said the interception was part of the Command’s efforts to prevent the port from being used to move prohibited goods, adding that the seized substance had been handed over to the NDLEA for further investigation and necessary action.

Receiving the consignment, the Commander of Narcotics, NDLEA Lekki Port Area Command, Jonah Achema, described the seizure as significant, noting that the 400 kilogrammes of cannabis, identified by him as Cannabis Indica from Thailand, was substantial.

Achema disclosed that the interception followed earlier seizures at the port involving two containers of illicit pharmaceutical opioids identified as Tramadol 225 and Tramaking Royal 250.

He said the two consignments weighed a combined 46 tonnes and had an estimated street value of ₦35 billion.
