The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has ordered an immediate investigation into a video circulating on social media alleging unprofessional conduct by personnel at its Akwa Ibom State office in Uyo.
The Commission expressed serious concern over the allegations, stressing that no form of provocation should justify unprofessional treatment of a complainant.
In a statement issued by Fatimah Agwai Mohammed, Director of Corporate Affairs and External Linkages, the Commission stressed that its professional standards require personnel to treat every complainant with dignity, respect and professionalism, regardless of the circumstances.
The statement noted that the protection of human rights begins with how people seeking assistance are treated, adding that complaints must be handled with patience and professionalism, even when situations become challenging.
The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Chief Tony Ojukwu, OFR, SAN, has directed an immediate investigation to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
The NHRC stated that appropriate administrative action would be taken in line with extant rules if any infraction was established.
The Commission reiterated its commitment to accessible, free, timely and accountable service delivery, urging members of the public who encounter difficulties accessing its offices to report such experiences through its toll-free line, 6472.
