September 6, 2025, marks nine years since the passing of Lt. Col. Mohammed Abu Ali, a decorated Nigerian Army officer who lost his life in the battle against Boko Haram in Mallam Fatori, Borno State. Nicknamed “Sarkin Yaki” (Hausa for “War King”), Lt. Col. Abu Ali was a revered military leader known for his bravery, strategic brilliance, and unwavering dedication to his men. Born on August 15, 1980, in Kogi State, Nigeria, Lt. Col. Abu Ali graduated from Command Secondary School, Jos, and later attended the Nigerian Defence Academy. He rose through the ranks, becoming a Lieutenant Colonel and commander of the Army’s 272 Tank Battalion. His unit played a crucial role in recapturing key towns from Boko Haram, including Baga, Monguno, and Gamboru-Ngala.
Lt. Col. Abu Ali led the operation to retake Baga from Boko Haram in February 2015, avenging the January 2015 massacre that left hundreds dead. He received the Chief of Army Staff award for exceptional bravery in September 2015 for his role in the fight against Boko Haram. His unit successfully recovered several towns, including Monguno, Bama, Gwoza, and Mallam Fatori, rescuing thousands of civilians and restoring hope to the region.
Lt. Col. Abu Ali’s death on November 4, 2016, was a significant blow to the Nigerian military. His funeral, attended by top government officials, including the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, and President Muhammadu Buhari’s representative, Abba Kyari, was a testament to his impact on the nation. His legacy continues to inspire Nigerians, with many remembering him as a patriot who embodied the spirit of selflessness and courage. As Nigeria continues to grapple with the challenges of insurgency, Lt. Col. Abu Ali’s memory serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by military personnel in the line of duty. His final words, “We will win,” remain a rallying cry for those fighting against terrorism. Indeed, his labour will never be in vain.
