Joy and excitement filled the premises of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory Council, Abuja, as members gathered in large numbers to receive bags of rice distributed by the council as part of its end-of-year welfare support. The atmosphere was light and festive, with journalists exchanging warm greetings, laughter and handshakes, many visibly relieved as they took delivery of the staple food item meant to support their families during the Christmas season.
The distribution exercise, which saw over 600 bags of rice shared among journalists across various chapels in the FCT, was personally supervised by the NUJ FCT Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike. She moved round the venue, welcoming members and ensuring an orderly process, a gesture that further strengthened the sense of togetherness that defined the day.
Speaking at the event, Ike said the initiative was driven by the council’s firm belief that the welfare of journalists must remain a priority, especially at a time when economic pressures continue to weigh heavily on media professionals. She explained that the rice distribution was a practical effort to provide some relief and show appreciation to journalists who work tirelessly, often under challenging conditions, to keep the public informed.
She noted that the programme has become a regular feature of the council’s activities under her leadership, sustained through careful planning and support from partners, adding that her administration remains committed to building a union that responds to the real needs of its members. Ike urged journalists to remain united and supportive of one another, assuring them that the council would continue to explore more ways to improve their welfare.
Earlier, the NUJ FCT leadership held a meeting with representatives of its State Executive Council, where updates were given on ongoing projects and administrative efforts, including progress on the remodelling of the NUJ Congress Hall. Members at the meeting expressed satisfaction with the direction of the council and passed a vote of confidence on the chairman and her executive team.
As journalists departed the venue with their bags of rice loaded into vehicles and balanced on shoulders, the cheerful mood lingered. For many, the gesture eased the pressures of the season, while for the union, it reaffirmed the importance of solidarity and shared responsibility within the journalism profession in the Federal Capital Territory.
