The Defence Headquarters has confirmed that the Nigerian military has concluded its internal investigation into allegations of a coup plot against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and has formally submitted its findings to the President in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.
Military authorities disclosed that the probe, handled through established intelligence and disciplinary channels, examined the conduct of a number of serving officers earlier detained over actions considered inconsistent with military ethics, professionalism, and loyalty to constitutional authority. The report, now before the President, outlines the findings of the inquiry and recommends appropriate next steps in line with military law and regulations.
According to defence sources, officers found to have cases to answer are expected to face established military judicial processes, including possible court-martial proceedings, subject to presidential review and approval. The military stressed that the process was guided strictly by internal rules and the Armed Forces Act, with emphasis on discipline, command responsibility, and the subordination of the military to civil authority.
The Defence Headquarters reiterated that the Armed Forces of Nigeria remains committed to democratic governance and would not tolerate conduct capable of undermining national stability or constitutional order. It added that internal accountability mechanisms are essential to maintaining public confidence in the military institution.
The development follows months of public speculation after the arrest and detention of several officers in late 2025. At the time, military authorities described the action as routine disciplinary measures linked to breaches of service regulations, dismissing claims of political motives. As reports persisted and concerns grew, the military instituted a comprehensive investigation to establish the facts, culminating in the submission of the report now before the President.
