The League of Anambra Journalists in Abuja (LAJA) has called for stronger institutional support and improved opportunities for female journalists, stressing the need to enhance their welfare, safety and professional advancement within the media industry.
The association made the call as the global community commemorates the 2026 International Women’s Day, noting that women in journalism continue to make significant contributions to public discourse despite facing unique professional and social challenges.
According to a press statement jointly signed by the President of LAJA, Amb. Ikenna Okonkwo, and the Secretary, Princess-Ekwi Ajide, female journalists remain vital voices in promoting accountability, social justice and community development through their work in the media.
The association observed that the journalism profession demands courage, resilience and an unwavering commitment to truth, qualities that female journalists demonstrate daily while navigating barriers such as workplace discrimination, limited access to leadership positions and safety concerns during assignments.
LAJA noted that empowering women in the media profession is not only a matter of fairness but also a strategic step toward strengthening journalism itself, as women bring critical perspectives and human-centred storytelling that enrich public understanding of societal issues.
The group therefore urged media organisations, professional bodies and policymakers to prioritise policies that promote equal opportunities, mentorship programmes, fair representation of women in newsroom leadership and safer working environments across media institutions.
It further stated that deliberate investment in the capacity and wellbeing of female journalists would enhance their ability to carry out their duties effectively, produce impactful reports and contribute meaningfully to national development.
The association also encouraged young women aspiring to build careers in journalism to remain resilient and committed to the profession, assuring them that their voices are essential in shaping a more informed and inclusive society.
LAJA reaffirmed its commitment to promoting unity, professional excellence and initiatives aimed at empowering female journalists within the association and the broader media community.
International Women’s Day is observed globally on March 8 to celebrate the achievements of women while drawing attention to the need for greater gender equality and opportunities for women and girls in all sectors of society.
