The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has restated its commitment to advancing a green telecoms initiative aimed at reducing operational costs across the telecommunications sector, with projections that operators could cut expenses by as much as 50 per cent through energy transition measures.
The Commission said the initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to address the high cost of powering telecom infrastructure in Nigeria, where operators continue to depend heavily on diesel due to unstable public electricity supply.
According to the report, the NCC is encouraging wider adoption of renewable energy solutions, including solar and hybrid power systems, for base stations and other critical network infrastructure. The transition is expected to ease operating pressures on telecom operators while improving efficiency and service reliability.
Energy costs remain one of the biggest burdens in the sector, accounting for a substantial share of operational expenditure. Industry stakeholders have repeatedly raised concerns over how these costs affect service delivery, network expansion, and pricing for consumers.
The Commission’s position reflects broader regulatory efforts to promote cleaner and more sustainable energy use within the telecommunications ecosystem. It also aligns with ongoing policy discussions aimed at strengthening funding mechanisms to support energy transition projects in the sector.
Beyond cost reduction, the initiative is expected to reduce carbon emissions and improve the resilience of telecom infrastructure, particularly in rural and underserved communities where access to stable electricity remains limited.
