Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have repelled a terrorist attack on a military location in Benisheikh, Borno State, in the early hours of Thursday after armed men attempted to force their way into the base.
The attackers approached under cover of darkness but were engaged immediately by troops on duty, who responded with sustained fire and forced them to withdraw in disarray.
The Defence Headquarters said the incident reflects continued pressure on terrorist groups operating in the North East, noting that recent operations have significantly reduced their capacity to launch coordinated attacks. It said the attackers have increasingly resorted to isolated strikes following losses sustained in ongoing military offensives.
Troops at the location maintained defensive positions throughout the encounter and prevented any breach of the facility. The exchange was contained within the perimeter of the base.
The military confirmed that some personnel lost their lives during the incident. It said they died while carrying out their duties in defence of the country and extended condolences to their families.
Following the attack, troops have continued clearance operations around the general area, with efforts focused on tracking fleeing fighters and recovering abandoned weapons.
The Defence Headquarters restated its commitment to ongoing operations across the theatre aimed at dismantling remaining terrorist elements and restoring stability to affected communities.
Residents were urged to remain calm and report suspicious movements to security agencies as operations continue in the area.
