In an effort to fulfill his campaign promise to constituents of Idemili and achieve food security and reduce hunger, Hon. Uchenna Harris Okonkwo, the honorable member representing Idemili North and South federal constituency, today, August 10th, 2024, distributed 50 Kg nets of UREA Fertilizers to farmers and farmers’ cooperatives across the constituency.
This innovative initiative introduces our local farmers to modernized agriculture, aiming to empower Idemili farmers to venture into commercial agriculture for local consumption and export opportunities. Speaking on the importance of modernized agriculture, Hon. Okonkwo noted that communities like Nkpor and Oraukwu, known for cultivating pumpkin leaf (Ugu) and bitter leaf, can embrace the initiative for commercial purposes. Other towns like Alor, Ojoto, Oba, and Akwu-ukwu can venture into cash crops like cashew, palm wine, yam, cocoyam, and maize cultivation. In a similar development, farmers’ cooperatives in the constituency expressed happiness over Hon. Okonkwo’s fertilizer empowerment program, noting that they had long sought such support from the previous government but finally received it. Today’s distribution of UREA Fertilizers is not just a routine exercise; it is a beacon of hope for a brighter future and food security in Idemili North and South. With visionary leaders like Hon. Uchenna Harris Okonkwo at the helm, the constituency is well-positioned to unlock its full agricultural potential, achieving food sufficiency and export opportunities for local farmers.
