Nigeria has lost a stalwart statesman with the passing of Chief Dubem Onyia, a former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Honorable Member of the Federal House of Representatives. His demise sent shockwaves across the country, with tributes pouring in from prominent figures, associates, and loved ones.
Chief Onyia’s life was a testament to his dedication to public service and his commitment to the development of Nigeria as a whole. As a former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, he played a significant role in shaping Nigeria’s foreign policy, and his contributions to the nation’s legislative processes as a member of the House of Representatives were invaluable.
The funeral mass, held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ngwo, Enugu State, was a grand affair, attended by dignitaries from all walks of life. The Catholic Bishop of Enugu, Most Reverend Callistus Onaga, led the funeral mass, which was filled with emotional tributes and eulogies. Very Rev. Fr. Franklin Eze, in his homily, emphasized the fleeting nature of life and the importance of leaving a lasting impact. Onaga commended Onyia for his selflessness and dedication to public service, emphasizing that his legacy would remain evergreen.
Notable figures who attended and sympathized with the bereaved family included Mr. Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, who commended Onyia for his diplomacy and commitment to Nigeria’s peace and progress. Professor Charles Soludo, Governor of Anambra State, Mrs. Bianca Ojukwu, Chief Jim Nwobodo, former Governor of old Anambra State, Minister of State, Foreign Affairs, Senator (Engr.) Osita Ngwu, Abia Ike N’Eti: Senate Minority Whip and the Senator Representing Enugu West Senatorial District, Ngwu underscored the impact of late Onyia’s active legislative contributions to the nation. Senator Orji Uzor Kalu attended the requiem mass, highlighting Onyia’s sacrifices for nation-building and selfless service.
Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State delivered a moving eulogy, describing Onyia as “a legendary figure, a moral giant, and a man whose shoulders served as a ladder of success for so many”. He praised Onyia’s philanthropic efforts, particularly in his hometown of Ngwo, and noted that his legacy would continue to inspire future generations.
One of Chief Onyia’s close associates, Engr. Emma Ene (Ikenga Umabi), in an emotion-laden voice described late Onyia thus: “The late Ozo Dubem Onyia was a long-standing mentor, a very good friend, and a guiding light. We were close for a long time, but unfortunately, he fell ill two years ago, and today, he’s been laid to rest. It’s truly unfortunate that we are losing a man of peace, a kind-hearted individual who always lent a helping hand. Anyone who approached him with a problem would leave with solace. He had a unique ability to handle situations with care and compassion, always ensuring that you left better than you came. I must confess, I have never referred to anyone as my ‘master’ before, but Dubem Onyia truly earned that title in my eyes.”
Chief Dubem Onyia was laid to rest over the weekend in Ngwo, Enugu State, marking the end of an era. However, his legacy will live on, inspiring Nigerians to strive for excellence and to make a positive impact in their communities.
