The Nigerian Senate yesterday held a public hearing on crude oil theft, where various stakeholders discussed strategies to combat the menace. Senator Ned Nwoko, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Crude Oil Theft, emphasized that crude oil theft is a significant threat to both the national economy and security.
Senator Nwoko tasked the Nigerian Military and other paramilitary agencies to prioritize inter-agency collaboration to effectively combat crude oil theft. The Senate Committee aims to implement stronger policies, deploy advanced security measures, and hold those responsible accountable.
During the hearing, Comrade Victor Okwuepusu, National Coordinator of Concerned Ndokwa Patriots, highlighted the lapses and compromises involved in oil theft in the oil-producing region. He expressed disappointment at the ineffective and insincere approach towards tackling the menace by security operatives.
The Senate’s efforts align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, focusing on securing natural resources, driving economic stability, and fostering growth and development. Protecting crude oil reserves is seen as crucial for ensuring a sustainable future for all Nigerians.
