The Honorable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Ezenwo Wike Esq., has appealed to the National Assembly to approve the FCT’s N1.78 trillion Statutory Budget proposal for the 2025 fiscal year. The Minister made this call yesterday when he appeared before the Senate and House of Representatives joint committees on FCT to defend the 2025 FCT proposed budget.
The proposed budget is broken down into N1.28 trillion for capital projects, which represents 72.3% of the budget, and N494.1 billion for recurrent expenditure, amounting to 27.7%. Similarly the recurrent expenditure is made up of N150.4 billion personnel cost and N343.8 billion overhead cost. Wike who threw more light and further explained that the N1.78 trillion 2025 budget is N115 billion higher than the N1.67 trillion 2024 revised budget, representing a 7% increase.
Wike also broke down the proposed capital budget, stating that N919.7 billion is dedicated for the completion of ongoing capital projects and other counterpart-funded related projects aimed at enhancing socio-economic activities in the territory. Additionally, N80 billion is set aside for SUKUK loan projects, N25 billion for the Abuja Light Rail project, and N15 billion for the Abuja Greater Water Supply project. N250 billion is earmarked for commercial loans planned to complete some ongoing capital projects in federal capital and satellite towns.
Some of the lawmakers who spoke during the interactive engagement commended Wike’s exceptional performance as FCTRA Minister. Senator Ibrahim Bomai, Chairman of the Senate Committee on FCT, lauded Wike, saying, “What FCT has presented is one of the best budgets so far that will further improve and develop the FCT”. This is the first time FCT is proposing to generate about N1.7 trillion.” Bomai assured Wike of the Senate’s support, stressing that his performances were clearly noticeable by everyone.
Senator Mohammed Ndume (Borno South, APC) equally praised Wike, noting the visible progress in Abuja’s infrastructure. “Everybody that knows where Abuja was two years ago and compared to what it is now, knows that you have done well,” Ndume stated amidst applause.
Senator Osita Ozunaso representing Imo West, APC spotlighted the budget’s shift in priorities as a sign of strategic planning, commending Wike for reducing personnel costs and allocating more funds to capital projects, he however suggested for world class hospital in Abuja. Senator Adams Oshiomhole representing Edo North, APC described Wike as one of the best performing ministers under the APC-led administration, especially his strong commitment to turn rural areas into cities while at the same time beautifying the city center!
Senator Ireti Kingibe representing (FCT, LP), applauded Wike’s pragmatic leadership and striking performance, she also acknowledged his numerous achievements within his short period, saying, “The visible performance is undisputable.” she excitedly stated while rounding off let’s approve the FCT statutory budget they deserve it.
The Chairman of the House Committee on FCT, Rep. Muktar Betara, commended Wike for the ongoing transformation of the nation’s capital. Betara assured Wike of the committee’s continued support, adding that they would carry out periodic oversight visits to see things for themselves and offer advice where necessary.
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has undergone a remarkable transformation since Nyesom Wike assumed office as its Minister. The tireless and innovative leader nicknamed ‘Mr Project’ when he was the Rivers State Governor has carried on with the massive project execution mentality to the FCT and has been instrumental in turning the city around, improving infrastructure, and enhancing the quality of life for its residents. From the construction of new roads and bridges to the revitalization of public spaces and of course- opening up rural areas!
Wike’s efforts have been visible and impactful. His commitment to developing the FCT has earned him widespread recognition and praise from citizens and lawmakers alike.
