Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has commended Abdullahi Ganduje, the former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), on his decision to resign due to health issues. Obi described Ganduje’s resignation as a rare and commendable act in Nigerian politics, setting a precedent for other leaders facing health challenges.
In a statement released on Friday, Obi emphasized that Ganduje’s resignation serves as a timely challenge to other leaders who, despite being aware of their inability to perform, continue to hold onto power. He stressed that Nigeria needs leaders who are both mentally and physically fit to tackle the country’s pressing issues.
“Nigeria’s current challenges demand leaders who are not only competent but also physically and mentally agile,” Obi said. “The country can no longer afford the burden of medical tourism, long holidays, or absenteeism caused by age-related ailments.”
While Obi did not name specific individuals, his remarks are widely interpreted as a veiled critique of prominent figures in the current administration who may be struggling with health issues while still holding power. “Leadership isn’t meant for those on extended medical breaks,” he added.
