The Independent Corruption Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has secured the conviction of Mr. Saifullahi Haruna, an officer of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), for involvement in employment fraud. The conviction followed a petition received by the ICPC against Haruna.
According to the ICPC, Haruna fraudulently obtained N140,000 in installments from a victim in 2021 under the pretense of securing employment for the victim in the NIS. Haruna failed to secure the employment and did not refund the money until a petition was filed against him with the ICPC.
Haruna was arraigned before a Katsina State High Court on a one-count charge bordering on obtaining by deceit and abuse of office. He pleaded guilty as part of a plea-bargain and sentencing agreement with the ICPC.
Honourable Justice A.B Abdullahi, the presiding judge, accepted the plea bargain considering that Haruna had refunded the amount involved in the offense. The court sentenced Haruna to pay a fine of N10,000 or serve one year in prison if he fails to pay the fine. The court also ordered that the recovered amount be paid to the complainant, Adamu Ibrahim.
The ICPC confirmed this in a press release on Sunday, July 20, 2025, signed by Demola Bakare, Director of Public Enlightenment and Education and Spokesperson for the Commission.
