The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has cautioned Nigerians against sharing their personal data, including National Identification Number (NIN), for financial gain or inducement. According to a press release signed by Dr. Kayode Adegoke, Head, Corporate Communications, NIMC, the Commission will not be held liable for any personal information shared by individuals directly or by proxy for such purposes.
The warning follows a recent statement by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Nigerians selling their personal information to Fintech institutions. NIMC expressed serious concern over the security implications and consequences of such actions on NIN holders.
The Commission reiterated that Nigerians have been previously informed not to disclose their NIN to unauthorized individuals or organizations and emphasized the need for verification of NIN before granting services. To enhance security and control over personal information, NIMC encouraged the public to download the NINAuth App on Apple iOS or Google Play Store.
