Former Inspector-General of Police Chief Mike Mbama Okiro has denied claims of usurping the powers of current IGP Kayode Egbetokun. In a statement released on August 2, 2025, Okiro described the claims as “entirely false” and an attempt to tarnish his long standing reputation.

Okiro explained that his recent involvement with retired Inspectors General of Police was to discuss the compulsory retirement of some senior police officers, not to undermine Egbetokun’s authority. The forum, comprising former I-Gs, aims to promote the welfare of police officers and advance justice and security in Nigeria.

Okiro assured that the forum will continue to contribute to the growth and development of the Nigeria Police Force, focusing on protecting the rights and dignity of serving and retired police officers. He described Egbetokun as an intelligent, well-educated, and experienced police officer who does not require external influence to carry out his constitutional duty as the head of the country’s police force.

Okiro urged the public to disregard malicious claims and focus on real issues affecting the nation. The statement was signed by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Supreme Ibitomi, in Abuja.
