A shocking incident of corruption and abuse of power has led to the arrest of a serving police officer and three civilians by the Edo State Police Command. The suspects, identified as Inspector Ojo Oloruntobi and his civilian accomplices, Charles Onah, Joseph Ohis, and Enoma Agho, were apprehended on August 15, 2025, for allegedly terrorizing residents of Benin City through acts of brutality, extortion, and armed robbery.
According to the police spokesperson, CSP Moses Yamu, the arrest followed a viral video in which a victim alleged that he was abducted by policemen, stripped of his phone and valuables, and subjected to harassment and intimidation. Acting on the complaint and other related reports, Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika directed that the perpetrators be identified and arrested without delay.
The suspects were intercepted by operatives of the Ugbowo Surveillance Team with a silver-colored Toyota Yaris and other incriminating items. The police commissioner strongly condemned the incident, describing it as “shameful and criminal.” He assured that the suspects would face the full weight of the law, emphasizing that the command has zero tolerance for corruption, abuse of office, or misconduct within the force.
The victim, who was allegedly abducted by the policemen, recounted his harrowing ordeal, stating that he was stopped by the officers around Sapele Road, close to Adesuwa Junction, Benin City. They accused him of being wealthy because his wife is an American, and subsequently handcuffed and brutalized him, taking his phone and valuables.
The Edo State Police Command has taken a firm stance against the suspects, with Commissioner Agbonika warning that any officer found engaging in misconduct, extortion, brutality, or corruption will be swiftly dismissed, arrested, and prosecuted. The command is urging members of the public, including the victim featured in the viral video, to come forward with credible information to aid the investigation and ensure justice is served.
The police command reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, restoring public confidence, and upholding the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force. The suspects are currently in custody, and the investigation is ongoing.
