As Nigeria joins the global community to commemorate the 2025 International Humanitarian Day, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has paid tribute to the selfless dedication and sacrifices of humanitarian workers worldwide. In a statement, NHRC Executive Secretary Dr. Tony Ojukwu acknowledged the tireless efforts of humanitarian workers in providing critical assistance to vulnerable populations.
Dr. Ojukwu emphasized the need for collective action to strengthen humanitarian work and ensure that those in need receive the help they deserve. He called on stakeholders to prioritize the protection and dignity of vulnerable populations, enhance collaboration, increase support for humanitarian workers, and promote inclusive and sustainable humanitarian responses.
The NHRC is currently collaborating with the UNHCR to document reports of human rights situations affecting vulnerable populations in Nigeria. This initiative aims to inform evidence-based interventions to address their needs, and will be followed by a quarterly Humanitarian Dashboard on the humanitarian situation in the country.
Dr. Ojukwu thanked the humanitarian community in Nigeria, including the UN system, Red Cross, ICRC, and international agencies, for their support in protecting civilians and vulnerable populations. He reaffirmed the NHRC’s commitment to upholding human rights and dignity, and emphasized that together, a more just, equitable, and compassionate world can be created for all.
