The Honourable Member representing Idemili North and South Federal Constituency, Hon. Uchenna Harris Okonkwo, has strongly condemned the assault and humiliation of a female member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Miss Jennifer Elohor Edema, by operatives of the Anambra State security outfit, Agunaechemba, in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area.
The lawmaker described the assault as “condemnable,” “primitive wickedness,” and “dehumanization” of a citizen they are meant to protect. He reiterated that assault in any form remains a criminal offense under Nigerian law and expressed solidarity with the victim and her family.
Hon. Okonkwo called on the Anambra State Government, the Nigerian Police, and other relevant authorities to ensure that those responsible are apprehended, prosecuted, and made examples of to deter future acts of savagery. He also urged the State Government to ensure proper training for personnel recruited into the security architecture.
The lawmaker assured the constituents of Idemili North and South of his commitment to formulating policies that prioritize the rights and dignity of all residents.
The brutality and excesses of state vigilantes in Anambra State, particularly the Agunaechemba security outfit, have raised concerns about human rights abuses and the need for greater accountability and oversight. The recent assault on the NYSC member is just one of many incidents that highlight the need for urgent action to prevent such abuses of power.
