The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has confirmed the removal of all unregistered SIM cards from the country’s telecommunications network, marking a significant step towards strengthening national and cyber security. According to NCC Executive Vice Chairman, Aminu Maida, no unregistered SIM is operating on the network as of today. However, the commission noted that some subscribers may still be using fake names, which is an offense in Nigeria.
The NCC has put in place measures to ensure stability in the industry, allowing users to determine the best network operator to patronize based on performance, service delivery, and charges. A public map will be launched in September to show subscribers which telecoms network provides the best service and tariff plan in various locations.
The commission approved the recent tariff hike due to the lack of cost-reflective tariff adjustment for over a decade. Maida emphasized the need for good corporate governance guidelines to promote transparency, accountability, and investor confidence. The NCC plans to engage with state governors to address threats to telecoms infrastructure and multiple taxation, which will improve service delivery and national security.
The removal of unregistered SIMs is expected to boost national security and cyber defenses. With over 153 million SIMs linked to National Identification Numbers (NINs), the NCC is working to ensure a safer telecoms environment for Nigerian subscribers.
