The remains of former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Agunwa Anaekwe, are to be laid to rest on Friday, October 17, 2025, at his Adazi-Ani country home in Anambra State. Anaekwe, a seasoned lawyer, administrator, and entrepreneur, passed away on July 5, 2025, at the age of 69.
Anaekwe’s journey in politics began early, serving as the acting president of the National Association of Nigerian Students before venturing into politics. He was elected to the House of Representatives in August 1992 on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and became the Speaker of the House on December 5, 1992, at just 36 years old.
During his tenure, Anaekwe demonstrated courageous leadership, resisting anti-democratic forces and ensuring the House remained the voice of Nigerians. His term may have been truncated by the military dissolution of democratic institutions in 1993, but his impact on Nigeria’s legislative history remains significant.
The Nigerian Senate paid a heartfelt tribute to Anaekwe, observing a minute of solemn silence in his honor. Senators praised his contributions to the nation’s development and democracy, urging the Federal Government to immortalize him by naming a national public institution or edifice in his honor. Former Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, a close friend and ally, described Anaekwe’s passing as the fall of a political giant, praising his leadership style and unwavering support during times of crisis.
As a founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and later a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Board of Trustees, Anaekwe remained committed to upholding the values of democracy, justice, and patriotism. His legacy continues to inspire legislators across the nation.
