The Nigerian Navy has underscored the significance of maritime security in the country’s economic development, emphasizing its commitment to protecting the nation’s maritime domain. This was highlighted at the 3rd Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria (MARAN) Annual Maritime Lecture.
The lecture brought together stakeholders from the maritime industry to discuss pressing issues affecting the sector. The Nigerian Navy’s participation in the event demonstrates its dedication to collaborative efforts in ensuring the safety and security of Nigeria’s waters.
Rear Admiral Michael Gregory Oamen, Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, noted that Nigeria’s waters have remained safe for over three years, with no recorded piracy incidents. He emphasized that the continued classification of Nigeria as a high-risk maritime zone is unjust and unsubstantiated, given the country’s significant investments in maritime security infrastructure and international collaborations.
The MARAN President, Godfrey Bivbere, stated that the association aims to use the lecture as a platform to demand action from the international community, particularly the International Maritime Organization and major insurance firms, to remove Nigeria from the war risk classification. This move is expected to alleviate the burden of war risk insurance premiums on Nigerian maritime trade.
