In the realm of politics, the tone and language used by leaders and aspirants can no doubt significantly impact the discourse and perception of their campaigns. Several separate jabs by His Excellency Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, the Governor of Anambra State in which he derided virtually all his key opponents in the forthcoming gubernatorial election, raises concerns about the appropriateness of such language in political discourse and at his level of exposure. While politics can be competitive and intense, maintaining a level of decorum and respect is essential for fostering a healthy and constructive political environment. I think that issue based campaign discourse should take a center stage rather than all low morbid amusement scenarios at the slightest opportunity. We are having serious developmental and security challenges staring all of us in the face and it requires tact and serious minded problem solving techniques to address those challenges. No Governor in any restive or crime prone state in Nigeria should be having normal sleep or regular fun. It is all about human lives and property wasting away and therefore every possible solution must be deployed.
We have to take cognisance of the fact that the impact of such remarks can be far-reaching. Such language can polarize the electorate, undermine credibility, distract from key issues, and set a poor example for others. When politicians choose to engage in name-calling or belittling opponents, of course they may risk being seen as lacking the maturity and statesmanship required for effective governance. There is certainly no denying this underlying fact.
Issue-based campaigns offer a more constructive and respectful approach to political discourse. Focusing on policy differences and substantive issues enables politicians to engage in meaningful debates, inform the electorate, build credibility, and foster a more civil discourse. This approach allows voters to engage with the issues rather than personalities, leading to a more informed and nuanced understanding of the candidates and their positions.
The importance of caution and restraint in politics cannot be overstated. Let us bear in mind this Igbo proverb, “Onye na-ebu nkụ arụru si ngwere pukwuta ya oriri” or loosely translated “He who fetches ant-infested firewood invited ants.” This proverb depicts the idea that our actions and words can have consequences that we may not fully anticipate. Politicians must consider the potential impact of their language and actions on their audience and the broader political environment and apply caution.
This approach will foster a positive tone, build trust with voters, and focus on substance. They can engage in more meaningful discussions about the issues that matter most to the electorates, rather than getting bogged down in personal attacks and petty squabbles.
Decent conduct and remarks are essential in politics, particularly during campaigns. Politicians who focus more on respect, positivity, and issue-based discourse can create a more uplifting and inspiring campaign that squarely aligns with voters. They can build trust, foster a more civil discourse, and demonstrate their commitment to governance and leadership. The tone and language used by politicians can shape the quality of political discourse and the health of democratic institutions.
Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Your actions speak so loudly that I cannot hear what you say.” This quote highlights the importance of consistency between words and actions in politics. Politicians must ensure that their words are backed by tangible actions and policies that benefit their constituents which can be seen and felt.
In Anambra State, the forthcoming election presents an opportunity for politicians to demonstrate their commitment to decent conduct and remarks. Voters can demand a higher level of discourse and hold politicians accountable for their words and actions. When this is achieved, they can further shape the quality of political discourse and the health of democratic institutions in the state.
Effective leadership requires a deep understanding of the needs and concerns of constituents. Politicians must engage with voters, listen to their perspectives, and develop policies that address their needs.
Moreover, decent conduct and remarks in politics can have a profound impact on the next generation of leaders. When politicians model respectful and constructive behavior, they set a positive example for young people who are watching and learning. This can help shape the tone and quality of future political discourse, contributing to a healthier and more functional democracy. However, as a contestant or interested party if you feel strongly that your opponent is not fit under the law to contest any election, you can spearhead a legal action.
