The National Human Rights Commission has commended the release of Kebbi journalist Hassan Mai-Waya Kangiwa, who was detained for exposing the poor conditions at Kangiwa General Hospital. The Commission’s Executive Secretary, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, described the detention as a blatant violation of human rights and freedom of expression.
While welcoming the payment of ₦200,000 in compensation to Kangiwa, Ojukwu noted that the Kebbi State Government still needs to tender a public apology to fully comply with constitutional requirements. The Commission also applauded the suspension of the Kebbi State Commissioner for Health, Yunusa Isma’il, over gross negligence.
Ojukwu emphasized the importance of press freedom and the role of journalists in holding public officials accountable. He urged the Kebbi State Government to prioritize citizens’ well-being and ensure healthcare facilities meet basic standards. The Commission will continue to monitor the situation, ensuring that human rights are protected and those responsible for violations are held accountable.
The NHRC expressed appreciation to all who played a role in exposing Kangiwa’s unlawful arrest and detention, particularly the media, and looks forward to continued collaboration to promote and protect human rights in Nigeria.
