Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, was a spectacle of grandeur this past weekend—precisely on Saturday, 20th September 2025—as it played host to one of the most glamorous society weddings of the year: the traditional marriage of Chikamkpa Amaechi, son of former Minister of Transportation and two-term Governor of Rivers State, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, and Anita, daughter of prominent businessman and philanthropist, High Chief Martin Nwabueze (popularly known as Akubudike).
From the moment the first convoy of dignitaries pulled into the popular expansive A Class event center , it was evident this was no ordinary celebration. Abuja had never looked brighter as it converged Nigeria’s political titans, captains of industry, cultural leaders, and business moguls—all gathered to honour the union of two illustrious families.
The festivities opened with colourful traditional rites steeped in Igbo and Niger Delta culture. Guests were ushered in with vibrant drumming, dancers, and maidens adorned in rich attire. The bride, resplendent in a coral-beaded ensemble that embodied her heritage, was welcomed with ululations and chants as family members showered prayers of fruitfulness and enduring love upon the couple.
Speaking during the ceremony, a visibly elated father of the groom, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, told the gathering: “I am overwhelmed with joy. As a parent, there is no greater pride than to see your child take this step. My prayer is that their union will be filled with love, patience, and God’s guidance.”
The guest list read like a roll call of Nigeria’s most influential figures. In attendance were Mr Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State and presidential candidate of the Labour Party; Chief Larry and his wife, Senator (Iyom) Uche Ekwunife, APC Deputy Gubernatorial Candidate for Anambra State, who described the event as “a celebration of love and unity that shows the resilience of our traditions.” Senator Chris Ngige, former Minister of Labour and Employment, remarked that “weddings like this remind us that beyond politics, our families and values are what bind us together.”
Senator Aminu Tambuwal, immediate past Governor of Sokoto State and a serving Senator, and Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and former Governor of Imo State, also graced the occasion. Both men extolled the virtues of family legacy, with Ihedioha noting: “Today, we are not just celebrating a couple but the continuity of two great families who have contributed immensely to our country.”
The event also drew renowned businessmen, including, High Chief Michael Duru Ejiogu, Chairman City Gates Homes, Chief Chidi Anyaegbu of Chisco Group, who praised the glamour and organisation of the ceremony, and Chief Mike Umeh, former Chairman of the Nigeria Football Federation, who described it as “a wedding befitting royalty.” Chief Uche Nworah, Ezeudo Enugwu-Ukwu na Umunri and former Managing Director of Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS), was equally present.
Chief Babachir Lawal, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, was sighted exchanging pleasantries with old colleagues. He observed: “What we have witnessed today is not just a wedding but an atmosphere of unity across political and social divides.”
Royal presence was strong. His Royal Highness, Chidubem Iweka III, Monarch of Obosi, His Royal Highness, Igwe Mac-Anthony Okonkwo (Elibe), revered traditional ruler of Alor,
alongside Igwe Ochendo Eze-Igbo Ado, attended in full regalia, lending a majestic aura to the celebration. They blessed the couple and stressed the importance of culture in strengthening marriages.
Adding to the business representation was Dr Tonye Cole, entrepreneur and politician, who applauded the couple for “choosing to anchor their marriage on strong cultural foundations while embracing modern elegance.”
Other notable personalities at the event included Senator Ben Ndi Obi (Ojeligbo), Senator Osita Izunaso, Chief Osita Chidoka, Mr Osita Okechukwu, Hon. Dozie Nwankwo (Onyendozi), Dr Tanko Yunusa, Hon Stephen Ameh, Chief John Chinedu Mbanaso and his amiable wife, Comrade (Mrs) Ada Mbanaso, Hon Jennifer Oguzie, Lady Tonia Oluoma, Lady Ebere Eze (Splendour), Hon Nwabugo Nwajiuba alongside members of the diplomatic corps, serving and former ministers, leading industrialists, and cultural icons—making it a true gathering of Nigeria’s elite.
Beyond the array of powerful names, younger guests also voiced their excitement. Chidinma Okeke, a childhood friend of the bride, said: “We have all been looking forward to this day. Seeing her so happy and radiant makes me believe in true love.”
The reception was nothing short of a spectacle. A live band alternated between soulful ballads and pulsating Afrobeats, keeping the guests entertained as they dined on a lavish buffet of local and continental delicacies. The high point of the evening came when the couple stormed the dance floor with a choreographed routine, complete with dazzling pyrotechnics and a dramatic motorbike sound effect that sent the crowd into a frenzy.
As the evening wound down, fireworks illuminated the Abuja skyline, casting a magical glow over the city. Hand in hand, the newlyweds beamed with joy, surrounded by family, friends, and dignitaries who had travelled from across Nigeria and beyond.
The groom’s father Rt Hon Amaechi is married to Her Excellency Dr (Mrs) Judith Rotimi Amaechi who hails from historic town of Enugwu-Ukwu in Anambra State and by coincidence their son has also married from Umudioka town in Anambra State.
For many, the Amaechi–Nwabueze wedding was more than a celebration of love; it was a symbol of cultural pride, unity across divides, and the enduring legacy of two distinguished families. Abuja will not forget this day in a hurry.
The white wedding will hold in Abuja this weekend, and it promises to be another grand affair.
