The Nigerian media industry was plunged into grief on Monday following the death of Somtochukwu Christelle “Sommie” Maduagwu, a reporter, producer and news anchor with Arise News, who was fatally attacked in her residence in the Katampe area of Abuja during an alleged armed robbery.
According to a statement released and signed by Hadiza Usman-Ajayi on behalf of Arise News management, Sommie tragically passed away in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025, following an armed robbery incident at her home that is being investigated by the Nigeria Police.
She was 29 years old. The statement described her as “a cherished member of the Arise News family” whose “voice engaged and connected with our viewers.” It added: “Sommie’s voice is now silent but her spirit, passion and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory. We remain in shock and call for a speedy investigation, apprehension and prosecution of the culprits.”
Police sources confirm that an investigation has been launched into the circumstances of the attack. Colleagues and industry peers have poured out tributes online, mourning her loss and calling for justice. Madugwu, who was born December 26, 1995, was also a trained lawyer, a detail often cited as part of her intellectual grounding.
She is survived by her parents, siblings and extended family. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the days ahead.
