The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, has announced that the Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, will formally join the ruling party next week.
According to a press statement signed by the APC national chairman, the defection is expected to take place on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, and will be accompanied by a large delegation of political leaders from Enugu State.
Yilwatda disclosed that Governor Mbah’s planned defection followed weeks of consultations between the governor and the party’s leadership, adding that the move signals a new political awakening in the South-East.
“The APC is home for all. Whether you came yesterday, today, or will come tomorrow, everyone has equal rights in our progressive family. Our mission is to expand, to unite, and to win decisively in 2027,” the APC chairman said.
Ahead of the governor’s defection, the APC National Working Committee had dissolved the Enugu State Working Committee and inaugurated a seven-member caretaker committee to oversee the party’s affairs in the state.
Chairman of the caretaker committee, Dr. Ben Nwoye, confirmed that the governor would be joined by 260 councillors, 24 members of the Enugu State House of Assembly, federal legislators, and members of the state executive council.
Political observers believe the move will mark the end of the Peoples Democratic Party’s unbroken control of Enugu State since 1999 and could trigger further defections across the South-East region.
The PDP is yet to issue an official response, but sources within the party described the development as “an unfolding realignment” ahead of the 2027 general elections.
