The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has commenced moves to prosecute a self-acclaimed journalist for allegedly defrauding unsuspecting members of the public of about ₦14 million.
According to a press statement signed by ICPC spokesperson, Mrs. Azuka Ogugua, the suspect, who paraded himself as a media practitioner, was accused of obtaining money under false pretence from several victims, promising to facilitate appointments and employment opportunities in government establishments.
The Commission revealed that preliminary investigations uncovered a trail of fraudulent transactions linked to the suspect, adding that he had used fake documents and forged official references to deceive his victims.
Mrs. Ogugua stated that the suspect will soon be arraigned before a competent court upon completion of investigations, as part of ICPC’s renewed commitment to rid the nation of corruption and related offences.
She urged members of the public to be wary of impostors who exploit the name of the media or public institutions for personal gain, stressing that the Commission will continue to bring offenders to justice, regardless of their status or connections.
