The Police Service Commission (PSC) has deployed staff monitors to the three senatorial zones of Anambra State ahead of Saturday’s governorship election. According to a press statement signed by Ikechukwu Ani, Head of Press and Public Relations, the monitors will observe police conduct throughout the electoral process. The PSC’s National Coordinator and Chairman, DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd, mni), warned that officers on election duty must demonstrate impartiality and discipline, and must ensure protection of electoral officers and materials. He further directed that a conducive environment be created for voters to cast their ballots without hindrance and stated that any officer who compromises the rules of engagement will be sanctioned. Argungu described the Anambra election as a test case for the police ahead of the 2027 general elections. He expressed satisfaction with preparations by the Anambra State Police Command under CP Ikioye Orutugu (fwc, PhD), highlighting visits to area commands and known flashpoints to underscore readiness. The PSC said it will recognise officers who exhibit professionalism while penalising those who fall short. The monitors will operate from the state capital and the three senatorial districts.
The election has attracted sixteen candidates and is set to engage approximately 2,802,790 registered voters across the state’s 5,718 polling units. Prominent among the contenders is the incumbent Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, seeking re‑election under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). His main challengers include Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), George Moghalu of the Labour Party (LP) and Jude Ezenwafor of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The PSC is a constitutional body charged with oversight of the Nigeria Police Force and the conduct of police officers. All eyes will be on Anambra State this Saturday, November 8, 2025 as off-cycle gubernatorial election is set to take place.
