The Senate has confirmed Idris Ibikunle Olorunnimbe as Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) Board, alongside five other members, in a move aimed at strengthening governance and regulatory oversight in the nation’s telecommunications sector. The confirmation followed the adoption of a report by the Senate Committee on Communications during Tuesday’s plenary session.
Those confirmed include Maryam Bayi representing the North East, Senator Ramoni Olalekan Mustafa from the South West, Ikechukwu Ugwuegede from the South East, Princess Oforitsenere Emiko, and Christopher Sandy Okorie, both from the South South.
The newly confirmed members will join the Commission’s executive management team led by Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Commissioner Technical Services Engr. Abraham Oshadami, and Executive Commissioner Stakeholder Management Rimini H. Makama.
The confirmation of the board completes the leadership structure of the NCC at a time Nigeria is expanding broadband access, improving telecom regulation, and accelerating its digital economy goals. The screening process, conducted by the Senate Committee on Communications, reviewed the nominees’ credentials, regional representation, and alignment with the national policy direction. The plenary confirmation reportedly passed without objection, reflecting broad legislative consensus.
With the board now fully constituted, stakeholders anticipate improved regulatory efficiency, stronger consumer protection measures, and deeper engagement with industry operators. The Commission is also expected to drive greater innovation in broadband rollout, 5G deployment, and fibre-optic infrastructure expansion across the country.
Established by the Nigerian Communications Act of 2003, the Nigerian Communications Commission remains the apex regulator of the country’s telecommunications sector, responsible for licensing, spectrum management, consumer protection, and promoting fair competition within the industry.
