Veteran journalist and media icon Dan Ochima Agbese has died in Lagos at the age of 81, according to information made available by the family.
Agbese was one of the founding editors of Newswatch magazine, which he established in 1985 alongside Dele Giwa, Ray Ekpu, and Yakubu Mohammed. He later became Editor-in-Chief of the publication, where his disciplined approach to writing and firm commitment to investigative journalism helped redefine newsroom standards across Nigeria.
Before the Newswatch era, he worked with The Nigeria Standard and New Nigerian and also served as General Manager of Radio Benue, building a reputation as one of the most respected voices in the media space. He authored several well-regarded books on journalism, including The Reporter’s Companion, The Columnist’s Companion, and Style: A Guide to Good Writing, which remain reference materials for many in the industry.
Agbese earned a degree in Mass Communication from the University of Lagos and a Master’s in Journalism from Columbia University in New York. His career was marked by decades of thoughtful commentary, editorial courage, and a dedication to mentoring younger journalists.
His death has been widely mourned across the media community, with colleagues and admirers describing him as a rare professional whose clarity of thought, integrity, and commitment to press freedom shaped generations and left an enduring mark on Nigerian journalism.
Dan Agbese was born on May 20, 1944, in Agila, Okpokwu, Benue State, and was detained in 1994 during the military era following an interview that drew the ire of authorities. His legacy remains one of courage, intellect, and service to the profession.
