The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has expressed deep concern over the escalating insecurity in the State, warning that no area is safe for residents as a result of incessant killings and other violent acts.
The House called on the State Government to take urgent and proactive measures to end the rising wave of violence. Speaker Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau Ph.D made the appeal while reading the House resolutions during matters of public interest in Lafia, following a motion by Minority Leader Hon. Luka Iliya Zhekaba on the spate of killings across the State.
Speaker Jatau commended Hon. Zhekaba for raising the matter and thanked other lawmakers for their contributions. While acknowledging Governor Abdullahi Sule’s ongoing efforts to tackle security challenges, he urged the government to intensify actions to curb the killings.
The House resolved that the State Commissioner of Police and other security agencies should investigate recent killings in Obi, Doma, Nassarawa Eggon, Lafia, Keana, and other constituencies. Citizens were urged to remain vigilant and report the movements and hideouts of criminals, while village heads were called upon to identify residents and visitors to ensure community safety.
Hon. Zhekaba lamented the violence in his constituency, recounting that on Monday, November 10, two people were killed on their way to Gidan Rai community, and that another two were killed later that week in the same area. He emphasized that lawmakers are elected to speak for their people, noting that it is the duty of government to protect lives and properties.
Other lawmakers, including Hon. Mohammed Adamu Omadefu, Hon. Musa Ibrahim Abubakar, Hon. Solomon Yakubu Akwashiki, Hon. Jacob Ajegena Kudu, and Hon. Esson Mairiga, also expressed concern over the killings in their constituencies. They described the State as being under siege, citing numerous incidents of killings and kidnappings that have claimed both civilian and security personnel lives. They called on security agencies to arrest perpetrators and ensure they face the full force of the law.
The lawmakers urged residents to remain alert and support security agencies by exposing criminals’ movements and hideouts, stressing that collaborative vigilance is crucial for restoring peace and safeguarding lives across Nasarawa State.
