The Nigeria Union of Journalists, Federal Capital Territory Council, has announced the death of one of its members, Mr. Sunday Olatuyi, who died after being knocked down by a vehicle at the Lugbe Bus Stop in Abuja, describing the incident as tragic and avoidable and demanding justice through the prosecution of the driver involved.
The union said Olatuyi lost his life on Saturday night, December 20, 2025, after he was hit by a Toyota Corolla with registration number ABUJA RBC 128 AM while returning home from work. He was reportedly heading home alongside a friend when the incident occurred at the busy Lugbe axis of the Federal Capital Territory. The council described the driver involved as reckless and expressed outrage over the circumstances that led to the loss of a journalist in his prime.
In a press release signed by the Secretary of the NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Jide Oyekunle, the council said it received the news of Olatuyi’s death with shock and deep sorrow, noting that his passing has thrown the entire journalism community in the FCT into mourning. The statement described him as a committed media professional and a dependable union man whose dedication to the profession and service to the union stood out over the years.
Olatuyi, who was 40 years old, hailed from Odo-Oro Ekiti in Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti State. He is survived by his wife, a seven-month-old daughter, Eniola, and his aged mother, who now face the painful burden of his sudden and untimely death.
Until his death, Olatuyi worked with Advocate Broadcasting Network Television as a senior cameraman, where he was known for his professionalism, technical skill, and commitment to duty. He had previously worked with Ben TV and was regarded by colleagues as a disciplined and passionate practitioner who took pride in his work behind the lens. The council noted that his contributions to the profession and his active participation in union activities would be deeply missed.
The NUJ FCT Council said Olatuyi’s death highlights the growing menace of reckless driving and the increasing disregard for human lives on roads within the Federal Capital Territory, warning that such incidents have become disturbingly frequent and require urgent attention from authorities.
The council condemned in strong terms the circumstances surrounding the incident and called for an immediate, thorough, and transparent investigation by relevant authorities. It urged the Nigeria Police Force to ensure that the driver involved is promptly prosecuted in line with the law, stressing that justice must be done and seen to be done to serve as a deterrent to others.
The NUJ FCT Council extended its condolences to Olatuyi’s immediate family, the management and staff of Advocate Broadcasting Network Television, the Correspondents’ Chapel, the Society of Practicing Cameramen, as well as friends and colleagues of the deceased across the media industry.
The council assured the bereaved family of its solidarity and support during the difficult period and pledged to continue to follow up on the case until justice is achieved.
