The President of the Senate, Godswill Obot Akpabio, has expressed confidence that 2026 will mark a year of renewed hope and steady national progress, driven by institutional responsibility, legislative diligence and collective resolve.
In his New Year message to Nigerians, Senator Akpabio acknowledged the resilience and patience of citizens, noting that democratic stability and national development depend largely on the strength and effectiveness of institutions. According to a press statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, the Senate President said the National Assembly, particularly the Senate, remains central to sustaining accountability, stability and inclusive governance.
Akpabio extended warm wishes to Nigerians for a peaceful and fulfilling year, commending their civic maturity in the face of economic and social challenges. He stated that while the Executive continues to drive policy implementation, the legislature remains firmly committed to its constitutional responsibilities of lawmaking, representation and oversight to ensure governance outcomes reflect the aspirations of the people.
He said the Senate and the entire National Assembly would continue to discharge their duties with diligence, offering legislative support where necessary, exercising oversight where required and acting consistently in the interest of national unity, economic stability and social justice.
The Senate President expressed cautious optimism that ongoing efforts to tackle insecurity, economic pressures, infrastructure deficits and youth unemployment would yield more visible results in the coming year, stressing that sustainable progress is rooted in strong institutions rather than individual personalities.
He noted that democracy is strengthened when institutions function properly and leaders remain accountable, adding that the National Assembly would continue to work towards strengthening institutions and ensuring that public policy remains people-centred and forward-looking.
As political activities begin to intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, Akpabio cautioned Nigerians against divisive politics and what he described as false messianic narratives. He warned that history has shown that individuals who present themselves as sole rescuers often deepen division rather than foster unity, stressing that democracy thrives on ideas, responsibility and respect for national cohesion.
He urged political actors to conduct themselves with restraint and a strong sense of national duty, assuring that the Senate would continue to uphold democratic norms, parliamentary discipline and the rule of law.
Akpabio also reaffirmed the commitment of the National Assembly to constructive engagement with the Executive, the Judiciary and other stakeholders in the task of building a more united, just and prosperous Nigeria, where leadership is defined by service and institutions endure beyond individuals.
He concluded by calling on Nigerians to remain engaged, vigilant and hopeful in the year ahead, urging continued support for democratic institutions and collective efforts towards peace, equity and national progress.
