At the first light of the New Year, High Chief Jim Martins Nwabueze, known as Ichie Akubudike and Agubuzo, walked the streets of Ugwueze with purpose. He moved from home to home, offering more than gifts. He brought attention, respect, and care to every corner of his community.
Children ran alongside him, their laughter echoing through the lanes, while women waved eagerly, grateful for his words of encouragement.
A highlight of the day was his visit to Pa Okonkwo, Ugwueze’s eldest man. Under a sprawling mango tree, they shared stories, lessons, and prayers. “It is not enough to lead,” Ichie Akubudike said softly. “We must remember those who laid the foundations we walk upon. Their wisdom guides us, their blessing strengthens us.” Pa Okonkwo prayed for his health, wisdom, and enduring service.
He also visited the sick, offering comfort and practical support. Kneeling to speak with a mother and her children, he said, “Leadership is about presence, empathy, and action.” Neighbors watched, moved by the sincerity in his gesture.
Songs of praise followed him through the streets. Children danced, elders nodded, and women prayed that his life be long and his strength renewed. The community glowed with unity and gratitude.
As the Igbo say, “Onye nwe ji mara otu oji eri ya” – the one who owns the yam knows how to eat it. True guidance comes from understanding and sharing in the lives of others. Another saying, “E jiri mara nwa nna ya”. This saying fits Ichie Akubudike’s humility and care, lived in each act of kindness.
One can only hope that whenever his people beckon him to represent them in any capacity, he will not decline. If one person can bring this light through his foundation, imagine the change possible through wider leadership.
According to the Ichie Akubudike Foundation Media, hundreds of households benefited this year. Smiles, relief, and unity marked a day that inspired the young, comforted the vulnerable, and honored the elders.
