The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has called for restraint and mutual forbearance in Rivers State following a series of political developments that have culminated in the Rivers State House of Assembly initiating impeachment proceedings against the Governor and Deputy Governor of the state.
According to a press statement signed by King Alfred Diete-Spiff, CFR, Amanyanabo of Twon-Brass, Co-Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Obong (Arc) Victor Attah, former Governor of Akwa Ibom State and Co-Chairman of the BOT, and Amb. (Dr.) Godknows Boladei Igali, OON, National Chairman, the forum expressed deep concern over the situation, describing it as deeply disturbing and a threat to law and order.
The statement further emphasized the strategic centrality of Rivers State to the Niger Delta region and its significance to Nigeria’s broader socio-political stability and economic wellbeing. PANDEF, which describes itself as a non-partisan and unifying platform for the South-South region, urged all parties involved to set aside differences, prioritize dialogue, and focus on the welfare and development of the people of Rivers State.
In the statement, PANDEF commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), respected elders of Rivers State, and other concerned Nigerians for ongoing efforts to restore peace in the state. The forum, however, noted that further intervention was necessary to prevent escalation.
To this end, PANDEF has constituted a high-level reconciliation committee led by Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, CON, former Attorney-General of the Federation. Other members include Senator Obende Domingo, former Senator of Edo North, as Vice Chairman; Rt Hon (Chief) Essien Nduese, CON, former Minister of Housing; Dr. Timiebi Koripamo-Agari, OON, retired Federal Permanent Secretary; Chief Mike Ejiofor, retired Director of the Department of State Services; Mrs. Nella Rabana-Andem, SAN, former Attorney-General of Cross River State; and Prince Godwin Okotie, Deputy National Secretary of PANDEF, serving as Secretary.
The statement further urged all stakeholders to cooperate fully with the committee, describing its members as highly respected sons and daughters of the South-South who are committed to achieving a peaceful, fair, and sustainable resolution through an inclusive and dispassionate process.
PANDEF, established as the apex socio-political body representing the South-South geopolitical zone, has a long history of engaging in peace-making and conflict resolution initiatives across the Niger Delta. The forum continues to position itself as a stabilizing force, advocating for good governance, development, and the protection of the region’s interests.
