The Nigerian Communications Commission and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps have warned construction firms and road contractors against actions that damage fibre-optic cables, describing the growing incidents as a serious threat to Nigeria’s digital economy and public services.
The agencies said frequent fibre cuts caused by excavation and road construction have continued to disrupt telecommunications networks, leading to internet outages, failed digital transactions and service interruptions for businesses and government operations across the country.
They stressed that fibre-optic infrastructure has been designated as Critical National Information Infrastructure, making it a protected national asset. According to the regulators, any damage resulting from unauthorised excavation, negligence or failure to engage relevant authorities attracts legal consequences under existing laws.
The NCC and NSCDC urged contractors, utility providers and government agencies at all levels to verify fibre routes before commencing projects, adhere strictly to approved right-of-way procedures and work closely with telecom operators during construction activities.
They also called for prompt reporting of accidental damage to enable quick restoration and reduce service disruption, noting that stronger enforcement and coordination remain vital to safeguarding infrastructure that supports Nigeria’s digital communications, commerce and essential services.
