The Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission, Tony Ojukwu, has been elected to the Bureau of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions, marking a significant development in Nigeria’s growing presence within the global human rights governance structure.
According to a press statement signed by Fatimah Mohammed, Director of Corporate Affairs and External Linkages of the Commission, the election represents a major milestone for Nigeria and reflects the increasing influence of the National Human Rights Commission in promoting and defending human rights at both regional and international levels.
As a member of the Bureau, Ojukwu will participate in the implementation of key policy decisions, oversee institutional operations, and contribute to the review and assessment of membership applications from national human rights institutions seeking accreditation within the global alliance. The Bureau serves as the governing organ responsible for guiding the strategic direction and operational effectiveness of the alliance.
Ojukwu’s election follows closely on the heels of his recent emergence as President of the Network of National Human Rights Institutions in West Africa, further strengthening Nigeria’s leadership role in regional and global human rights advocacy.
The Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions is the umbrella body of national human rights institutions worldwide, working to promote and strengthen independent human rights institutions in line with international standards, while the National Human Rights Commission of Nigeria serves as the country’s principal institution for the protection and promotion of human rights.
